Once you have decided the type of care you need, it’s time to narrow down which agency is the best fit for you. Here are the top six questions to ask when choosing a personal service agency.

Question 1 - Are you licensed with the state department of health?

Licenses can be validated online at IN.gov or verified at the 1-800 number associated with the agency. Licensure promises a regulated industry, benefits, background checks, audits, required liability insurance and workers’ compensation.

Question 2 - What benefit package do you supply to your caregivers?

How an agency treats its employees is very relevant to the type of agency you are dealing with. How are the caregivers treated? Do they receive bonuses? Is there a benefit package?

Question 3 - What is your turnover?

Learn how many new people they go through at a time. If employees want to stay then chances are they are being treated well.

Question 4 - How do you train your caregivers?

Find out more about the training process and what is required of the caregivers. Do they have mentoring programs? Often times there will be training protocol as well as required work alongside experienced caregivers. It is important for caregivers to learn that each house is different and requires a different approach.

Question 5 - What is your protocol when a caregiver doesn’t arrive at a shift?

A more specific variation of this question applies to those who require 24-hour service. If you have several caregivers, will it be the same caregivers each time?

Navigating health care on your own can be overwhelming, but there is an abundance of resources to help you find your way. If you have a need for care, don’t be afraid to start a conversation. Learn more about what services you can receive and what steps you can take to get them. Stay informed so you can stay independent.
